A recent report from Incredible Health, a leading AI-powered career marketplace for permanent healthcare workers, highlights how radiologic technologists (rad techs) are adapting to evolving professional landscapes marked by technological advancements and policy shifts. The sixth annual State of U.S. Nursing & Technicians Report reveals that rad techs exhibit a notably positive outlook on their careers amid these changes.

Key findings specific to imaging technologists include:

  • Proactive Engagement with AI: Approximately 38% of rad techs surveyed have utilized artificial intelligence in clinical settings, a rate more than double that of other healthcare technicians and nurses. Despite this engagement, 75% expressed a need for additional AI training and education.

  • Experienced Workforce Facing Potential Gaps: Nearly 40% of surveyed rad techs are aged 65 or older, indicating a wealth of experience but also signaling potential staffing shortages as these professionals approach retirement.

  • Increased Demand for Imaging Services: All rad tech respondents reported a rise in demand for surgical and imaging services, compared to 68% of other tech respondents. Moreover, 63% believe their organizations are well-equipped to handle this increased demand.

  • Relative Satisfaction with Compensation: While 74% of all techs feel underpaid, only 50% of rad techs share this sentiment. About 10% of rad techs indicated that a moderate raise would be beneficial.

  • Lower Levels of Burnout: Rad techs reported experiencing less burnout compared to other techs and nurses, with 63% feeling supported by their employers, suggesting a healthier work environment.

Dr. Iman Abuzeid, co-founder and CEO of Incredible Health, emphasized the importance of understanding the perspectives of nurses and technicians, stating, “Nurses and technicians comprise the majority of healthcare workers in the U.S. and it is essential to get their point of view on what is—and is not—working in our healthcare system.”

The report also notes that nearly 90% of all techs and nurses believe that policy changes related to Medicare and Medicaid will negatively impact health systems, with 63% expressing concern over how the political climate will affect their profession.

These insights underscore the resilience and adaptability of rad techs as they navigate the complexities of modern healthcare, balancing technological integration with workforce sustainability.
