Fujifilm and AWS Partner with East Coast Health System for First Cloud-Based Digital Pathology Deployment in North America
FUJIFILM Healthcare Americas Corporation has announced that a major East Coast health system, spanning five geographic regions, has selected Synapse® Pathology and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to digitize its pathology operations and accelerate diagnostic timelines. The project, set to roll out across all five hospital sites, marks the first fully cloud-based Synapse Pathology deployment in North America.
The health system’s decision reflects a broader strategy to embrace enterprise-wide digital transformation, emphasizing precision medicine, workflow efficiency, and cloud-integrated enterprise imaging. With Synapse Pathology serving as the digital backbone of its anatomic pathology services, the system expects to reduce the time to diagnosis by nearly two hours compared to traditional glass slide methods.
Synapse Pathology combines a hybrid storage model, merging on-premises infrastructure with the scalability of AWS cloud services. This setup ensures both the performance required for daily case volume and the flexibility to expand capacity as needed. By moving to a digital pathology PACS solution, the health system is aiming to improve collaboration across its distributed network and position itself for future growth in digital medicine.
A key element of the deployment is the system’s integration with Epic Beaker, the laboratory information system used across all sites. Synapse Digital Pathology offers a seamless interface with Epic, enabling automated case synchronization, real-time updates, and streamlined accessioning. For pathologists, technologists, and clinicians, this means digital pathology images and case data can be accessed directly within their familiar Epic workflows, reducing disruption while improving efficiency.
Mark Lloyd, vice president of digital pathology at FUJIFILM Healthcare Americas, emphasized the broader significance of the project. “This deployment reflects a growing trend among top-tier health systems to adopt enterprise-wide, cloud-hosted digital pathology platforms across geographies that not only digitize slides but also revolutionizes how care teams collaborate, diagnose, and treat disease,” Lloyd said. “With Synapse Pathology, Fujifilm is leading the charge—helping providers unlock the full potential of digital transformation in pathology and beyond. We’re proud to partner with forward-thinking health systems – and our partners at AWS – to deliver a transformative digital pathology solution.”
AWS also highlighted the role of cloud infrastructure in reshaping diagnostic workflows. “AWS is thrilled to partner with FUJIFILM to host a fully cloud-based environment to support the diagnosis and care of over 1.3 million patients,” said Dan Sheeran, AWS general manager for Healthcare and Life Sciences. “These are exactly the kinds of innovations we need in healthcare as we continue to seek more rapid and accurate diagnoses.”
As the recognized global leader in enterprise-scale digital pathology deployments, Fujifilm continues to demonstrate both experience and scalability with large rollouts. This latest collaboration not only advances the health system’s diagnostic capabilities but also represents a milestone in the adoption of cloud-based digital pathology across North America.
