Light at the End of the Tunnel

And, no, it is not the headlight of an oncoming train. We have finally left 2020 in the rearview mirror, and thousands of health care professionals have already received their COVID-19 vaccinations. I hope you are among them. The soreness in my left deltoid reminds me of how lucky we are to have this chance to be protected. It is the necessary first step in the long, slow return to normalcy, whatever form that will take.
At Applied Radiology we have even more to celebrate. This first issue of 2021 marks the beginning of our 50th year of publication. Five decades of Applied Radiology; it is honestly hard to imagine. We are so very grateful to our readers and contributors for their continued support. We would not be here without you.
While we do not want to mess with success, there are more changes to come than just my new picture. The Applied Radiology that you have come to know and trust–our print and digital editions, as well as our website—is being refreshed. All three platforms are being updated, with the goal of making them easier to read and navigate. We will roll out the upgrades over the course of our golden anniversary year, along with perspectives on the past 50 years of radiology from a variety of our field’s (and Applied Radiology’s) most respected experts.
As observant readers of Applied Radiology may have already noticed, we have a number of changes to our Editorial Advisory Board to announce:
Jennifer Cranny, MD, is stepping down from her roles as Associate Editor for Radiological Cases and a member of the editorial board. Although she offi cially held the Associate Editor position for only one year, Jennifer managed the lion’s share of our popular radiological cases for many years. We thank her and are so grateful for her outstanding contributions over the years; she will be sorely missed, and we wish her well.
Kristin K Porter, MD, PhD, has assumed the role of Associate Editor for Radiological Cases. Kristin will also remain an active member of the Body Imaging section.
Jeffrey C Hellinger, MD, MBA, has assumed the role of Associate Editor for Interventional Radiology. Jeff is a longstanding member of the editorial board, and we are grateful for his leadership in this growing area of radiology.
Thomas Pope, MD, one of the longest-serving members of our editorial board, has transitioned to the Musculoskeletal Imaging section. We thank Tommy, too, for his prior commitment to our radiologic cases.
Suzie Bash, MD, a frequent contributor to our journal, has joined the board as a member of the Artificial Intelligence section.
Amine Korchi, MD, FMH, has also joined the Artificial Intelligence section and is the first— hopefully of many— international members of the editorial board.
Sonia Gupta, MD, has transitioned to our Medical Industry section, where she will continue to lend considerable expertise on a wide variety of topics.
I wish you all a short tunnel and a safe return to lives closer to—but better than—those we led before.
Dr. Schwartz is the Editor-in-Chief of Applied Radiology. She is the Chief of the Division of Neuroradiology and holds the Robert A Zimmerman Chair in Pediatric Neuroradiology in the Department of Radiology at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She is also an Associate Professor of Radiology, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.
