Global Event Highlights the Need for Women to Find Out Their Breast Density

My Density Matters, a non-profit with a mission to empower women to find out their breast density, is hosting its third annual Find Out My Breast Density Day event on Wednesday, February 22. The event runs from throughout the day with different events and activities planned each hour with the goal to help share information for all who might be impacted by this hidden health crises.

Founder Leslie Ferris Yerger recently spoke with Applied Radiology about her breast cancer story and how it was hidden on mammography due to her dense breasts. “We empower as many women as we can to get educated so they understand what breast density is, what the risks are and what they can do, including advocating for additional screening and imaging” for themselves, Yerger told Applied Radiology.

My Density Matters has also launched an initiative, Check Your Chart, a program that teaches women how to access their online patient portal, read their mammogram report and look for key phrases that might indicate they have dense breasts.

According to the organization’s press release, the theme of this year's annual event is ‘It’s Time’ using the hashtag #DensityTime in all posts on social media, because it is time for more women with breast cancer to become survivors.
